I noticed the resurgence of an old 80′s hairstyle last year – crimps. I wanted to blog about it but I wasn’t sure if this hairstyle would emerge as a serious mainstream trend. A few celebrities have been spotted wearing crimps lately, so maybe now it’s catching on. If celebrities start rocking this trend more and more … it can be a very popular spring/summer hairstyle. Here are a few chicks wearing this trend well.

Chicks hopefully you haven’t thrown out those old crimping irons. Crimping irons are now being used to create fabulous textured hairstyles. Many fashion designers opted for textured  hair last year to complement their spring 2012 collections. The trick to this trend is to reinvent it and make it your own!

The Power Of Red

 The color red is synonymous with the feeling of passion, seduction, and love. Spice up your Valentine’s Day by going red! You’ll not only command your sweethearts attention, but everyone else around you.

Tip: Go with a natural red color that complements your skin tone. If you can’t commit… try a fun wig!

 The folks at Victoria Secret are the masters of “bedroom hair.” Soft tousled hair is the epitome of sexy. Guys love hairstyles that invite them to run their fingers through your hair - even if they don’t actually do it.

Tip: Use products that leave your hair feeling shiny and soft and avoid products that leave hair heavy and stiff.

Get Swept Away

There’s nothing like romantic curls. Give curly styles more sex appeal by pulling one side back. Pulling your hair back is very seductive. Tease your sweetheart by exposing your earlobe, neck, and shoulder… then conceal the other side with soft beautiful curls. Go ahead and be a big tease – he’ll love it.

Tip: Do not curl hair tight. Think soft romantic hair.

1. Setting Lotion or Hair Foam ( I use Lotta Body )

2. Jumbo End Papers (sold at local beauty supply)

3. Hair Clips

4. Rat tail Comb

5. 15-20 Medium Rods  (sold at Sally Beauty Supply) (rods come in all sizes)

Step #1

Shampoo and condition hair. Part hair into four sections.Use hair clips to hold hair in place.

Step #2

 Apply setting lotion to the first section.

Step #3

  Take a small section of hair. Fold the jumbo end paper halfway down. Then slide the end paper all the way down to the end. Make sure that your hair is really saturated so that the end paper slides down easily.

Step #4

 Place the tip (with the end paper) at the end of the rod. Roll up. I’m rolling my hair forward because that’s the direction I want my hair to fall in.

Step #5

 Your hair should look like a candy cane stripe on the rod. After rolling the rod up to your scalp… bend the top of the rod to hold it in place. This step takes practice…so don’t be discouraged if you don’t get it right away:)

Step #6

Proceed to rod each section of hair. Don’t worry about perfect rod placement… you can basically pick up random strands of hair and it will still come out cute! Now…get ready to stuff your alien-like hairdo under the hair dryer.

Step #7

 Okay… I headed over to the salon to use the hair dryer. Sit under hair dryer for 35-60 minutes or until completely dry.

This is how it looks dry with rods removed. I like to use a small amount of Bed Head Manipulator on my fingertips when pulling the curls apart to control frizz.

Step#8

Separate each curl a few times to create fullness.

Done!

 Whew… finally done! You can use spiral rods on all textures of hair. Chicks have fun…be creative…play and manipulate the curls to create beautiful textured styles. Try one side pinned back, or braided… create a sexy updo. Good luck!

 I know what you’re thinking…this style isn’t new. But recently chicks have been spotted rocking middle (center) parts with straight to slight wave texture long hair. This look is blunt and there’s little to no curl. Achieve this look by simply adding long hair extensions.

Tip: Buy quality hair to prevent hair tangling and shedding.

Tip: Do not cut bangs too short…just above the eye is perfect.

HEALTHY HAIR TEST:

1. Pluck a strand of hair from your head

2. Drop the strand of hair into an eight ounce glass of water

Okay chicks…if your hair strand sinks to the bottom of the glass quickly… your hair lacks protein and moisture. If your hair floats…it’s healthy! 

 I’ve listed three of my fave natural hot oil treatments below and they all add moisture and promote healthy hair and scalp. These hot oil treatments can be found in your home! If they’re not in your home…they should be!

Coconut Oil: I love coconut oil. Coconut oil helps to regrow damaged hair and  it’s effective in eliminating dandruff. It’s also a great moisturizer for dry hair, scalp and skin . Coconut oil is light, so it’s perfect for chicks with fine hair who suffer from dandruff and dry scalp. BONUS: You can also bake with coconut oil! Cooking with coconut oil has many health benefits. It aids in digestion, kills bacteria and  strengthens your immune system. You can find coconut oil at your local health food store. Tea Tree Oil: Tea Tree is one of the best healing oils. It’s a natural antibacterial disinfectant. One of the major hair/scalp benefits of tea tree oil is that it eliminates dandruff and scalp bacteria while adding moisture. Tea Tree oil is also great for men to use after haircuts…to help prevent razor bumps. Do-It-Yourself  HOT OIL Treatment

1. Take your oil of choice and put it into an applicator bottle. Heat oil in the microwave for a few seconds (you can buy applicator bottles from your local beauty supply)

2. TEST OIL ON YOUR FINGER FIRST TO MAKE SURE THAT THE OIL IS NOT TOO HOT!

3. Apply oil to your scalp and massage in using your fingertips for 5-10 minutes.

4. Comb oil through hair from scalp to ends. 

5. Run hot water over a towel. Twist out excess water and wrap the warm towel around your head.

6.Place a plastic cap over the towel for 15-20 minutes. (optional)

7. Shampoo and condition hair thoroughly.

*Like everything in life…you get out what you put in! If you take care of your hair and scalp…healthy hair will grow out!

The pin curl technique has been around for years. Pin curls were mostly used to wet set and finger wave hair back in the day. They are now a great way to create curl and body without using heat. Curling and straightening your hair everyday often leads to dry damaged hair and pin curls can help prevent hair breakage. In the tutorial below…I’ll show you how to create curl without using heat. If you’re a  natural hair chick…check out Chime ( Hair Crush) on YouTube…she does an amazing natural hair pin curl tutorial. Enjoy!

1. Pin Curl Clips (17 to 20 clips) or Jumbo Bobby Pins

2. Butterfly Hair Clips (3 clips)

3. Rat-tail Comb

Step #1

Part hair into three sections.

Step #2

Use butterfly hair clips to hold hair in place.

Step #3

 Wrap hair around your finger and make a circle. Roll hair upward to your scalp. The smaller the circle the tighter the curl! For longer hair I suggest tight pin curls.

Step #4

You can position your pin curl to go forward or back. I prefer to roll mine back. Using your pin curl clip…clip the top of the pin curl to secure it in place.

Step #5

I usually do 2 rows of 2 on the sides and 3 rows of 3 in the back . But you can do as many pin curls as you like…do whatever you feel comfortable with!

Whew..you’re done! It should look something like this when you finish. You can leave the pin curls in for a few hours before going out or you can wrap your hair in a silk or satin scarf and sleep with them overnight!

This is how it came out the next day. You’ll have to work with the curls a bit and your curls maybe a little tight. Run your fingers through your hair to create a style. Chicks…practice makes perfect so don’t get discouraged if your curls aren’t fabulous the first time. If at first you don’t succeed…try, try again!
